Dont ask people to connect on LinkedIn until
Dont ask people to connect on LinkedIn until⦠If I can, I like to connect people. It makes me feel good, and some of my contacts simply must connect with one another they are that cool or complementary! I recently made a connection between two people, and I suggested to one of them to NOT invite the person to connect until they actually had a conversation, and started a relationship. Why? Too often I see people who will take an introduction, ask the person to connect on LinkedIn, and then nothing. Folks, connecting on LinkedIn IS NOT NETWORKING! Focus on the relationship! Can you help that person? Can they help you? Is there a reason to have a relationship? Can you nurture the relationship? Can you get and give value through the years because of a relationship? Have a conversation. Then, in a month, or next quarter, have another conversation (or send an email). And do that regularly. Over time. Take the relationship from nowhere to somewhere. The problem with starting out with a LinkedIn invitation is that too often, many times, I see this: Invitation is extended. Invitation is accepted. Relationship doesnt go anywhere. The LinkedIn connection is not a relationship, and it is not networking. It gets in the way. So, first work on establishing the relationship, and the LinkedIn invitation/connection is something for later. Dont let it take the place of the relationship. Make Your Email Engaging, Not Enraging - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Despite the growth and influence of social media, email marketing is still an effective and affordable way to connect with your market. Email marketing helps you build rapport, share information, and make sales. However, email marketing done wrong will annoy your subscribers causing them to unsubscribe and avoid doing business with you. Here are some tips for ensuring your email marketing efforts generate business. 1. Always focus on value. Whether youâre sending an update, article or offer, your email should provide value to your subscribers. Peopleâs email boxes are full and theyâre feeling overwhelmed. Sending them content that doesnât benefit subscribers is a waste of time for you and your readers. Always have a clear purpose to your email (i.e. provide tips) and how it will help your readers. 2. Respect your subscribers. It should go without saying that everyone on your email list should have opted-in. These people have entrusted you with their email address in return for gaining information or resources. Donât ruin that trust by treating your list as a source of quick cash by over emailing or delivering subpar information (#1). Some email marketing gurus give guidelines on how often you should email and the ratio of content versus offers sent. While these tips can be helpful, what works best for your list will depend on your business and your subscribers. If you run a stock information business, subscribers might expect daily or multiple emails daily regarding the stock market. Most businesses, however, will have subscribers dropping like flies if they email daily. Itâs your job to determine what your list will view as value and what will be considered going too far. Monitoring your stats after emails can be helpful to find out how many people opened and clicked o n a link in it, as well as how many unsubscribed. 3. Make the email easy to read. Start with a subject line that says what the email is about. Vague or deceptive email subject lines for the purpose of tricking people into opening them will backfire and probably be labeled a spam. The next part of an easy-to-read email is that it can be read on multiple devices. Not all email-capable devices can handle extensive HTML and design. If you want to include HTML in your emails, have a text-only option as well. Most email list services provide the ability to create both HTML and text emails. Finally, keep your email short and to the point. People donât have all day to read paragraph after paragraph in an email. 4. Make it easy to unsubscribe. Most email list services offer a link in each email that allows the reader to unsubscribe. If you donât use a service, you should. People get annoyed if they have to jump through hoops to get off your list. Iâve had lists that required me to email and tell them what email address to take off the list. Thatâs too much work. Subscribers should only have to press a link to get off the list. Once readers unsubscribe, keep them unsubscribed. Lately, Iâve discovered that Iâm continuing to get email from some businesses after unsubscribing. Thatâs not only against CAN-SPAM laws, but itâs annoying and will likely lead to complaints and maybe even negative feedback online about your business. Ultimately, people join your email list because they expect to get information that is going to help them. If your emails donât offer the value theyâre looking for, theyâll opt out. You can make your subscribers happy by delivering helpful content, resources and offers, in a way that doesnât overwhelm or annoy them.

What Happened at Toys R Us Marla Gottschalk Photo by rawpixel on Unsplash Toys R Us may be a memory in a matter of weeks. That stirs a boat load of emotions for many of us. Personally, this conjures up the toys my own children enjoyed; Barney, Pokeman cards and Star Wars miniatures. Once again this confirms that time marches on, whether we like it or not. The same axiom also applies to the quickly evolving environments in which organizations must live. The landscape evolves, whether or not organizations are ready to respond effectively. Brick mortar operations have been hit particularly hard over the last decade. Like many that have struggled, Toys R Us has been a formidable company. A storied brand that continues to sell a lot of toys. However, things have changed. I frequently discuss how organizations have gone down the wrong path; how they might have chosen the wrong strategy or invested in leadership that led to only problems. However, Im not sure this tells the entire story with Toys R Us. Yes, leadership could have been more agile, shifting more intently to a focus on customer experiences. Yes, they have faced extreme financial challenges. Yes, they should have been ever-responsive to the e-commerce landscape. However, I have the distinct feeling these werent the only reasons why Toys R Us could be leaving us. You see, as an organization, Toys R Us may represent an era that no longer exists. (Please know I deeply respect what Toys R Us has accomplished as an organization.) A time when children played predominately with toys. When they were not using a device of some sort. A time when lingering in a toy store was on the to do list. Somehow I cant blame that shift entirely on one organization. It seems that Toys R Us is verging on extinction. (Hoping this does not come to pass.) The environment may not support its species any longer. The reasons why â" may have deeper ramifications. Only time will tell. What are your thoughts? How to find a job using Google+ - Perhaps you are skeptical about how social media use can improve your chances to land a new job. After all, the traditional media never hesitate to showcase people who make mistakes using Facebook and Twitter, causing them to lose their employment. Its likely youve barely even heard of Google+; what can this network possibly offer job seekers? In a nutshell: a lot. The caveat? You need to know a thing or two about Google+ to make the most it. To get started on the right foot and break out of your job search rut, keep in mind these four things all social media tools offer job seekers and the ways Google+ helps accomplish them: 1. The opportunity to demonstrate expertise. If you and the people you work with are the only ones who know how great you are at your job, it will be difficult to land a new opportunity down the road. Luckily, Google+, offers a platform to demonstrate what you know for people who do not already know you. Make the most of Google+ by posting updates that highlight your expertise. Are you a health insurance expert? Post links with news about how new regulations affect your industry and include your comments. Does your expertise include fashion or interior design? Create a stream of information and photos in your Google+ profile showing that you are up-to-date about whats fashionable and what is passe. Include pictures and commentary to illustrate what you know. When you use Google+ to post public updates, Google indexes your expertise, and you have a chance for your posts to appear as search results for other peoples queries about the topics you include in your updates. 2. The chance to expand your network. Have you ever wanted to connect with someone, but you couldnt access an introduction? Perhaps you considered cold calling the contact, but didnt feel confident you could actually connect? Using Google+, you can contact people you dont already know on line and communicate directly with them with no barriers to entry. Its as easy as finding the target person on Google+ (use the search bar at the top to discover if he or she is using the social network) and using his or her name in an update. To make sure you have the best chance to win someones attention, either use a + or an @ symbol before his or her name. For example, if you want John Smith to notice you, you can add him to your Google+ circles (the equivalent of your friends on Facebook) and follow what he posts. When you want to get his attention, comment on his posts or repost something he shared and use his name, +JohnSmith in your post. Doing so will trigger a notification for John that you mentioned him. Depending on the nature of your online conversations, you can easily impress John or other contacts and grow your network of people who know, like and trust you â" and who may be willing to refer you for a job opportunity or for an informational meeting. 3. Opportunities to learn information that could make you more marketable. Google+ can offer a great source of information youd otherwise never know. Google+ Communities is one go-to resource in this network. Find it via the dropdown menu on your Google+ page; there are communities for just about any topic you can imagine. Search for people who post content and links that interest you and get ready to learn new things. When you find a strong community of people, these communities can be of a goldmine of information at your fingertips. When you make a point to follow up and review even a small percentage of the information available, youll be better informed and able to respond intelligently to interview questions and in networking conversations. 4. Be found: reverse the job search process from push to pull. One of the most important things Google+ can help you accomplish is to improve the likelihood that someone will find you when they Google your name or your expertise. How amazing would it be if someone were to Google XYZ expert, and your Google+ content came up as the top results? It can happen, if you use Google+ strategically and create content online to support your expertise for your keywords. Another factor in being found: Googles search plus your world. You may have noticed, when you Google information while signed into your Gmail or other Google account, results you see come from people you know more often than not. The reason for this is that Google realizes that you are connected to these content creators and assumes their information is relevant for you. Similarly, when you have a robust Google+ profile and encourage people to add you to their circles, when they search online, your content is more likely to come up.
