Top 5 Medical Technology Innovations

Top 5 Medical Technology Innovations Top 5 Medical Technology Innovations Top 5 Medical Technology InnovationsAgainst the backdrop of health care reform and a controversial medical device tax, medical technology companies are focusing more than ever on products that deliver cheaper, faster, more efficient patient care. They are also making inroads with U.S. Food Drug Administration regulators to re-engineer the complex review and approval process for new medical devices.Just for You in 2019Six Lean Principles for an Industry 4.0 WorldMany in the industry have long felt overly burdened by what they consider to be an unnecessarily complex approval process. Critics claim it impedes innovation and delays the availability of better health care. To change that perception, the FDA belastung year announced a new Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC) charged with simplifying the process of designing and testing new technologies. With input from industry, government, and other nonprofit organizations, public-private MDIC will prioritize the regulatory science needs of the medical device community and fund projects to streamline the process.More in BioengineeringThe Engineering Behind Brain ResearchBy sharing and leveraging resources, MDIC may help industry to be better equipped to bring safe and effective medical devices to market more quickly and at a lower cost, says Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of the FDAs Center for Devices and Radiological Health.Thought leaders agree that todays best technologies strike a balance between reducing the overall cost of medical care and increasing safety and survival rates. As the regulators, politicians, and corporate executives hash out these details, industry engineers and scientists continue to push through new ideas for improving and managing human health. Every year, industry observers like the Cleveland Clinic and the medical device trade press single out their favorite technology trends. Cutting Back on Melanoma BiopsiesWith the most deadly form of skin cancer, melanoma, a huge number of dangerous-looking moles are actually harmless, but has always been impossible to know for sure without an invasive surgical biopsy. Today dermatologists have new help in making the right call a handheld tool approved by the FDA for multispectral analysis of tissue morphology. The MelaFind optical scanner is not for definitive diagnosis but rather to provide additional information a doctor can use in determinin g whether or not to order a biopsy. The goal is to reduce the number of patients left with unnecessary biopsy scars, with the added benefit of eliminating the cost of unnecessary procedures. The MelaFind technology (MELA Sciences, Irvington, NY) uses missile navigation technologies originally paid for the Department of Defense to optically scan the surface of a suspicious lesion at 10 electromagnetic wavelengths. The collected signals are processed using heavy-duty algorithms and matched against a registry of 10,000 digital images of melanoma and skin disease. The ATI Neurostimulator from Autonomic Technologies. Electronic AspirinFor people who suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, and other causes of chronic, excruciating head or facial pain, the take two aspirins and call me in the morning method is useless. Doctors have long associated the most severe, chronic forms of headache with the sphenopalatine g anglion (SPG), a facial nerve bundle, but havent yet found a treatment that works on the SPG long-term. A technology under clinical investigation at Autonomic Technologies, Inc., (Redwood City, CA) is a patient-powered tool for blocking SPG signals at the first sign of a headache. The system involves the permanent implant of a small nerve stimulating device in the upper gum on the side of the head normally affected by headache. The lead tip of the implant connects with the SPG bundle, and when a patient senses the onset of a headache, he or she places a handheld remote controller on the cheek nearest the implant. The resulting signals stimulate the SPG nerves and block the pain-causing neurotransmitters. The Symphony tCGM biosensor from Echo Therapeutics. Image EchoTX.com3. Needle-Free Diabetes CareDiabetes self-care is a painliterally. It brings the constant need to draw blood for glucose testing, the need for daily insulin shots and the heightened risk of infection from all that po king. Continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps are todays best options for automating most of the complicated daily process of blood sugar management but they dont completely remove the need for skin pricks and shots. But theres new skin in this game. Echo Therapeutics (Philadelphia, PA) is developing technologies that would replace the poke with a patch. The company is working on a transdermal biosensor that reads blood analytes through the skin without drawing blood. The technology involves a handheld electric-toothbrush-like device that removes just enough top-layer skin cells to put the patients blood chemistry within signal range of a patch-borne biosensor. The sensor collects one reading per minute and sends the data wirelessly to a remote monitor, triggering audible alarms when levels go out of the patients optimal range and tracking glucose levels over time. The Telemedicine ordnungsprinzip from InTouch Technologies. Image InTouchHealth.com4. Robotic Check-UpsA pillar o f health reform is improving access to the best health care for more people. Technology is a cost-effective and increasingly potent means to connect clinics in the vast and medically underserved rural regions of the United States with big city medical centers and their specialists. Telemedicine is well established as a tool for triage and assessment in emergencies, but new medical robots go one step furtherthey can now patrol hospital hallways on more routine rounds, checking on patients in different rooms and managing their individual charts and vital signs without direct human intervention. The RP-VITA Remote Presence Robot produced jointly by iRobot Corp. and InTouch Health is the first such autonomous navigation remote-presence robot to receive FDA clearance for hospital use. The device is a mobile cart with a two-way video screen and medical monitoring equipment, programmed to maneuver through the busy halls of a hospital. The Sapien transcatheter aortic valve from Edwards Lifes ciences. A Valve Job with HeartThe Sapien transcatheter aortic valve is a life-saving alternative to open-heart surgery for patients who need new a new valve but cant endure the rigors of the operation. Manufactured by Edwards Life Sciences (Irvine, CA), the Sapien has been available in Europe for some time but is only now finding its first use in U.S. heart centerswhere it is limited only to the frailest patients thus far. The Sapien valve is guided through the femoral artery by catheter from a small incision near the grown or rib cage. The valve materie is made of bovine tissue attached to a stainless-steel stent, which is expanded by inflating a small balloon when correctly placed in the valve space. A simpler procedure that promises dramatically shorter hospitalizations is bound to have a positive effect on the cost of care.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.More Exclusive 2019 Stories from ASME.orgSolving World Hunger with 3D-Printed FoodSix Project Man agement Tips Every Engineer NeedsInnovations in Biomaterials Create New Roles for Engineersspan.caption-two position relative display block width-removed 280px z-index 10 color808080 margin-removed 10px 0 100px 0 //margin-removed 10px 0 150px 0.image-break-backgr position absolute width-removed340px heightautoheight-removedautoheight-removedautoheight-removed202px z-index 1 margin-removed -110px 0 20px -200px /*position background here */ //margin-removed -105px 0 0 -380px.image-break position relative padding-removed 0px 0px 50px 0px dont-float-removed left width-removed 340px heightautoheight-removedautoheight-removedautoheight-removed202px z-index 4 margin-removed 0px 20px 20px -180px

Transferable Skills to Add on Your Resume

Transferable Skills to Add on Your Resume Transferable Skills to Add on Your Resume Adding transferable skills to your resume and showcasing them to potential employers can significantly improve your chances of reaching the first interview stage. It is also very effective if you want to produce a resume to help you change careers. If you want to move into a new profession you may feel that you lack some of the required skills. However, there are transferable skills that are relevant to most positions.  What are transferable skills?  Transferable skills are the abilities and talents you acquire which are not industry specific.Transferable skills examples: There is a wide range of transferable skills including communication skills (such as speaking, listening, and writing), problem-solving (strategic planning, project management, and decision making etc.), organizational skills (e.g. reliability, time management), and interpersonal skills (such as empathy, customer service, and leadership).Should you include transferable skills on your resume?Transferable skills on you r resume help to sell you to prospective employers but this doesnt mean you should include all of them on every resume you send. Its important to identify the transferable skills which the employer is looking for and then to clearly demonstrate them on your resume.Thankfully, it is not hard to know which skills an employer is looking for as they are normally clearly specified in the job postings. You then need to tailor your resume for each job you apply for by focusing on the key job requirements for each position.Focusing on the required transferable skills allows candidates to produce resumes which are ideal for making a career change. However, even if youre applying for similar positions, focusing on your strengths can also help your resume to stand out.Transferable skills are not the only skills you should include on your resume. Follow these tips for adding skills on your resume. How to write transferable skills on your resumeYou can include your transferable skills in the skil ls section of your resume. Simply saying that you have strong transferable skills is not enough. Anyone can say they are a team-player, have strong leadership skillsProvide examples of when youve actually demonstrated your transferable skills. An effective formula to demonstrate transferable skills on a resume is by explaining how your actions solved a problem and what the results were. Many candidates use PAR (problem, action, result). You can also use this method in other sections of your resume to give further examples. You can use the PAR method in your work experience section or in your key accomplishments section. Proving examples in this way is much more convincing for employers.Transferable skills listHere is a list to help give you ideas and to help jog your memory. Read through the list and identify the transferable resume skills you have. 5 Ways You Can Use Facts in Your Job Hunt

5 Ways You Can Use Facts in Your Job Hunt 5 Ways You Can Use Facts in Your Job Hunt "Just the facts, ma'am…" is the famous line attributed to Joe Friday on the old TV show Dragnet. But an Internet search reveals that what the character really said in an early episode was, "All we want are the facts." Recruiters, human resources staffing personnel, and hiring managers are like Joe Fridays: They just want the facts when reviewing your resume and conducting interviews. Here are five easy ways sticking to "just the facts" can help your job search:1. Use facts to stand out from the crowd. Often job hunters bemoan how difficult it is to be noticed. However, your chances for distinguishing yourself will skyrocket the more you provide understandable facts specific to your own work experience on your cover letters, resume, and during interviews. Don't be so general in your descriptions of your roles and activities that an employer can't understand what you have actually done. Don't just list your areas of expertise: Make each a bullet point where you relate your successes a nd accomplishments. The facts you provide demonstrate your value and distinguish you from the other people competing for your dream job.2. Get rid of superfluous clutter and meaningless jargon. Forget about what you think you are supposed to say, and jettison all the stock phrases that will be regarded as drivel or fluff. Instead, let each resume bullet point tell a story that demonstrates what you have done, how you did it, and the results you attained. These detailed facts, when taken together, will best demonstrate how you're a match for the employer's needs.3. Select the right facts: your successes and accomplishments. It would be accurate to covey your job description through a series of "Responsible for…" bullet points. But to do so says nothing about what you actually did, or how you handled your responsibilities compared to others who have held similar positions. What resulted from your actions? How did you contribute to increasing revenues, increasing productivity, or dec reasing costs for your employer? If you can provide the answer to these questions, you will have conveyed powerful information that will describe yourself without haughtiness or self-deprecation.4. Never misstate or make up facts. Resumes are fact checked as a matter of due diligence. No matter where you are in your career, it is imperative that anything you present as a fact be verifiable. If it is determined that you lied on your resume or in an interview, it is grounds for disqualification. If you're already on the job, it is grounds for termination.Often, you may not remember or have access to specific numbers. But there are creative and honest ways to get around this. For example, if you know that your activities had a role in increasing revenues, but you don't have a specific number or percentage to cite, you can write something like, "Revenues were significantly boosted by doing XYZ."5. Offer facts, not conclusions. Don't fall into the trap of making conclusions like, "I'm un iquely qualified /the best fit/ the perfect person for this job." Really? How do you know the qualifications and experience of the numerous other people you're up against? Your role as a job hunter is to provide information, and not to presumptuously usurp the judgment-making role appropriate for the hiring authority. To be sure, it takes a fair amount of time and effort to recall all that you have done over a period of years, but that is your role as a job hunter. If you do it well, you will certainly become noticed for your accomplishments, and have wonderful stories to tell when someone asks you in an interview, "Tell me about a time when you…"Happy hunting!Arnie Fertig is the head coach of JOBHUNTERCOACH.COM, where he utilizes his extensive background in HR Staffing and as owner of a recruiting company to help mid-career job-hunters land their next job. The next section of this interventional radiol ogy nurse resume sample reviews the applicant’s relevant experience in the field. The applicant uses action verbs to help make the information interesting while keeping it concise. Although this part should not be lengthy, it is nonetheless an important element to any strong resume. Why You Need a Strong Interventional Radiology Nurse ResumeThere is solid evidence demonstrating the continuous growth in the nursing field, with the year 2024 showing a predicted increase of 16 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That said, as the field grows, so do the number of worthy applicants hoping t o get their piece of the pie. Even if there weren’t competition, getting a radiology nursing position isn’t a walk in the park. Particularly in the healthcare field, many employers may choose to leave vital positions open instead of hiring a candidate that is not a good fit for the company.Several studies have shown that, for many recruiters, it only takes about five to seven seconds to skim through a resume, so you need to create a lasting impression. A strong resume that resembles our interventional radiology nurse resume sample is your key to making that small handful of seconds count towards a brighter future.Costly Interventional Radiology Nurse Resume Mistakes To AvoidBeyond some of the well-known mistakes seen in resumes such as grammar and spelling issues, falsified information, and unsightly formatting, there are a number of other mistakes that prospective interventional radiology nurses should look out for.It goes without saying that energy, stamina, and compassion to wards others are invaluable qualities in the nursing field. It is your responsibility to show how you are capable of effectively caring for individuals within a technically complex, fast-paced environment. Certainly, a nurse who appears unenthusiastic is going to struggle to convince employers that he or she possesses the motivation required for the job. In our interventional radiology nurse resume sample, the writer not only explicitly describes herself as “energetic” but also utilizes comforting phrases to display one of the role’s most desirable characteristics. Words like “relaxation,” and “beneficial,” support the idea that the applicant understands the qualities that are truly needed in the position.ConclusionAs you can see from our tips and the interventional radiology nurse resume sample we provided, with a proper understanding of what information to use and how to organize it, anyone can write a compelling resume. 8 Stages of a Successful Job Hunt

8 Stages of a Successful Job Hunt 8 Stages of a Successful Job Hunt No matter what your occupation or level of experience is, the process of getting a new job has several common elements. Once you understand the progression as a whole, you are less likely to make mistakes along the way. Here are the stages you’ll most likely pass through on your way to your next position: 1. Figuring out your value. The obvious but often overlooked truth is that people get hired for only one reason: They represent the best possible answer to an employer’s need to have X work done. Somehow that “X” contributes to increasing sales or productivity or decreasing risk and expenses. As a job hunter, it is your responsibility to understand and convey how it is that you can contribute to the advancement of any employer’s mission. What about your skills, education and experience will enable you to make a significant contribution to your next employer? 2. Determining your target. It is important to figure out the right type of company or organization that will generally need someone like you. It's also critical to understand in what kind of environment you will feel comfortable and productive. What industry? What organization size? What type of products or services? What kind of role? To learn about organizations in your area, you can do a great deal of research on LinkedIn. Specialized databases like Hoovers, accessible through most public libraries, can be invaluable. Support this research with informational interviews with key leaders in your field. 3. Crafting your brand and message. For whatever role you seek, you will likely face strong competition from many candidates who possess similar backgrounds as yours. Rather than ramble on about the responsibilities that you share with others, focus on the qualities, experience and expertise that set you apart from the pack. Your personal branding statement should be at the top of your  résumé  and LinkedIn profile. In essence, it is the answer to the first question at every interview: Tell me about yourself [and what sets you apart from your competition]. You should develop a consistent message, which is presented differently in the forms of your    résumé, LinkedIn profile and professional bio. 4. Prospecting. Now that you know your value and what you want, it's time to start actively prospecting for jobs. There are numerous ways to go about this by scouting posted positions on company Web pages, job boards, LinkedIn, Indeed and so on. But remember: About 80 percent of new hires come about from personal networking. Get out there and attend professional events like symposia, conferences, conventions and trade shows. Network with fellow college alumni, people in your community and at Meetup groups. In short: Network anywhere, everywhere and all the time! 5. Determining the rough fit in a phone interview. In most situations, an employer will sift through many  résumés  to do a “rough cut” of people who appear on the surface to  meet and exceed the minimum job requirements. Typically, an internal recruiter or human resources representative will make a call, say some flattering things and set up a phone screening interview. Don’t mistake statements like “you appear to have what we are looking for” as anything more than a general indication of interest. You don’t have the job yet! This is the time to show you're really the person your  résumé  represents. Be prepared to discuss every career and educational transition, the basics of what you do and  what would be required of you. This isn’t the time for final decisions or discussions of compensation. 6. Dealing with red flags. Part of the screening process is to take a look at anything that might be disqualifying for an otherwise potentially strong candidate. Things like employment gaps, too many or too few career transitions and a host of other factors might cause concern. Take time to figure out what your obvious red flags are, and be prepared to help your interviewer lower them, so you can proceed to making your case at the “real” interview. 7. Making your case. This, of course, is what happens at any face-to-face job interview. Come prepared for whatever can be thrown at you. Know your  résumé  inside and out, and be able  to expand on anything you have written in it. Articles and books about interviewing for a job are more than plentiful. Read them and prepare, but don’t over-prepare so much that your answers come off as rehearsed. When it comes down to it, you can’t fake sincerity and should never misrepresent what you’ve done. Rehearsed lines may also minimize the positive reaction you should have when demonstrating genuine interest in the company, role to be filled and how you would be able to make a significant contribution. 8. Negotiating the deal. You will always be in a stronger position to negotiate for a higher level of compensation if you wait until all your competition has been eliminated. Then you don’t have to worry about low-balling them or selling yourself too short. At the same time, remember that you want to start out on a good foot, with neither you nor the employer feeling dragged over the coals in a protracted or contentious negotiation. Talk about objective criteria rather than vague wants, and give a solid justification for whatever requests you make. Whole books are available for each of these stages of the job hunt. However, when you remember these basics and use them as a frame of reference for your own search strategy, you’ll have a sense of what you need to do to get to where you want to go. Happy hunting!Arnie Fertig, MPA, is passionate about helping his  Jobhuntercoach  clients advance their careers by transforming frantic “I’ll apply to anything” searches into focused hunts for “great fit” opportunities. If it's been three years or less since you finished school and the designer label on your diploma and/or your school accomplishments would more impress your target employers than would your work history, place the education section before the work experience section. As in the work experience section, list three or four accomplishments at school or in extracurricular activities. And as g rade inflation is the norm, only include your GPA if it's 3.5 or higher.Do include relevant education you've obtained outside of school: certifications, workshops, etc.Personal interests. List three or four. Often, a shared personal interest can be the tipper that lands you an interview and even the job.Cross-check. Misspelling and grammatical errors are signs of sloppiness if not ignorence. (Did you catch the spelling error? It's "ignorance." Just checking.)Double-check to be sure you've excised all sneakiness from your résumé, if not for an ethical reason, then for the pragmatic one that it reduces your chances of getting hired. For example, some people with employment gaps leave out the dates of their employment or call themselves a consultant. Most employers line their cat box with such résumés. And if, perchance, you make it to the interview or reference check, the truth will likely come out which will eliminate any chance of your landing the job. Similarly, deceptive older applicants try to hide their age, for example, by not including the date they got their college degree. Hint, Bucko: Before hiring you, they'll see your wrinkled puss and feel deceived and thus play wastebasket basketball with your résumé or even put you on the employer's permanent blacklist. Get candid feedback. Now put aside your résumé for a day, then reread it with fresh eyes and, as necessary, revise. Finally, show or email the draft to colleagues, friends and/or headhunters who are in a position to assess if it will likely impress your target employer. Ask them, "Is it clear, concise, and most important, would it make you want to interview me for my target job?" Urge them to be honest. Better to get their criticism than for employers to use your résumé as scratch paper or fish wrap. And now you have a strong, ethical resume, no Sturm und Drang required. The San Francisco Bay Guardian called Dr. Nemko "The Bay Area's Best Career Coach" and he was Contributing Editor for Ca reers at U.S. News. What to Do When a Recruiter Reaches Out to You

What to Do When a Recruiter Reaches Out to You What to Do When a Recruiter Reaches Out to You Most of the time in the job search, you’re the one in the driver’s seat. It’s up to you to write an amazing resume , find an opportunity that’s right for you, apply to the position and really market yourself to the company. But if you’ve got an impressive enough background or a mastery of hard-to-find skills, recruiters might be the ones reaching out to you . So what should you do when the tables are turned? Are the rules the same, or do things need to be handled differently? To find out, we turned to Erin Zaller, Senior Director of Delivery at Kforce . First off, if a recruiter reaches out to you, relax and congratulate yourself. It’s a good thing! “If a recruiter does reach out to you, it’s because you have a specific skill set or project experience… so there’s already interest on our side,” Zaller says. But just because they’re interested doesn’t mean you don’t have to impress them - recruiters will lose interest if you can’t maintain professionalism or sell them on why you’re a good fit. When drafting your first response to a recruiter’s message, make sure to thank them for thinking of you and taking the time to reach out to you. From there, you can share a little bit more about what you’re looking for. “It’s important to remember that you control how the relationship is going to be from that first interaction. Based on candidate feedback, I’m going to learn if they want more details or less, if they’re looking for market intelligence, if they need a higher pay rate or any number of things. It’s when candidates don’t approach the conversation with that open feedback that they end up with a not-so-great experience,” Zaller says. If you think you might want to learn more about the position, don’t play coy. “If you are interested in the opportunity, it’s best practice to reply with some availability for a deeper conversation and the best method to contact you” - preferably on the phone. “Be careful about judging a position through too many back and forth messages. It’s always best to have a conversation to dig deeper and decide whether the position is a fit for you,” Zaller adds. In addition to doing research on Glassdoor , there are a number of steps you can take to determine whether or not the job at hand is the right one for you. “To gauge an opportunity, I recommend setting up a phone conversation to test the recruiter’s knowledge on the role by asking questions such as: What are the day-to-day responsibilities? What business problems is this position trying to solve? Who will this person interact with? Then ask questions from a company standpoint, such as what’s driving the need for this role?” Zaller suggests. “If the recruiter can’t answer these questions, it’s a red flag that they can’t articulate the opportunity well enough.” If they struggle to answer, it might even be that they’re attempting to hide some negative aspects of the position. Another red flag? If the recruiter asks for too much information too soon. “There’s certain information [employers] may need throughout the recruitment process, such as your full name, contact information or last 4 digits of your social security number,” Zaller shares. “But you should only give truly personal information when you know the opportunity is legitimate , you’ve spoken to the recruiter over the phone and you know you’re moving forward in the interview. Think of providing that information as a down payment to hold your spot for the position once there’s interest on both sides.” “When a recruiter reaches out to potential candidates for a position there’s a baseline that qualifies each person for the opportunity in some way. Know that if you’re contacted there’s already interest on the recruiter’s end,” Zaller says. Still, that doesn’t mean your getting a job is a sure thing. There’s a good chance that the same recruiter has reached out to multiple candidates, and you want to make sure to prove that of everyone the recruiter has chatted with, you’re the best. “Those who end up being stand-out candidates are the ones who show passion for what they do and have pride in their voice when they talk about their experience. It’s like a lightbulb goes off when you have someone who talks through the exact challenge the company is having and presents measurable ways they’ve solved it before. As I’m talking to a candidate like this, I can envision them in an interview with the hiring manager and completely nailing it,” Zaller says. “This also shows a level of eagerness to move forward in the process that lets me know you take it seriously.” Recruiters reaching out to you is undoubtedly a good sign, but you shouldn’t assume that you’re a shoe-in. If you can respond to a recruiter’s message with tact, confirm with them that the opportunity is a good fit for you and describe why you’re the right person for the job, though, there’s a good chance that you’ll continue to move forward in the interview process. Just remember to act confident (not cocky!), ask the right questions and highlight your passion.

Here are some tips to help you start your career

Here are some tips to help you start your career Here are some tips to help you start your career One of the most important career lessons I’ve learned is to pursue a career and not a job. At first glance, you might think, “What’s the difference?” I also didn’t get it for years. That’s how I finally ended up in an IT job that I wasn’t passionate about. At one point, I was reflecting on my career and life by writing in my journal and thought, “How on earth did I end up in this job?”  I didn’t have a good answer. All I knew was that I felt stuck and lacked any future perspective. If you have ever been in that position, or are in it right now, you know that it’s depressing. How Conscious Are Your Decisions? If you would ask me “how did you end up in your current job?” four years ago, I would tell you this: “It just happened.” It’s a common answer to that question.Looking back, I realized that I never made conscious decisions about my career until that point. We all believe we’re Independent and that we make our own decisions. But that idea about ourselv es is false. The truth is that we chase things like money, status, job titles, promotions, corner offices, respect from our peers, you name it. All external factors. We must stop putting our careers in other people’s hands. We must take control by making conscious decisions.Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the most conscious thinkers of all time, said it best:“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” What Career Do You Want? Most of us don’t know what we want. I also didn’t know exactly what I wanted for many years. At least, that’s what I told myself. Deep down, I knew damned well what I wanted to do. It’s what I’m doing right now: writing, teaching and speaking.Until four years ago, I was simply too afraid to pursue this career because of one thing: creating a career is hard.I believe that we all have something we love to pursue. Whether or not that’s something we actually end up doing for the rest of our lives doesn’t matter. What matters is that we consciously decide to pursue a particular career. And that we don’t pick a job because we need the money. Or because our parents want to.Just like Emerson said, you decide who you become. After successfully creating my own career, I’ve identified 5 steps that can help you to get started.1. Analyze yourselfI’ve never met a successful person who did not build a career on their strengths. It simply does not exist. No one can perform well by doing something they are bad at.Sure, you can improve your weaknesses. But it’s not an effective strategy. Like Peter Drucker says in  Managing Oneself:“It takes far more energy and work to improve from incompetence to mediocrity than it takes to improve from first-rate performance to excellence.”So figure out how you perform. Identify your strengths. Then, go to the next step.2. Identify an industry that fits your strengthsThis is a tough one. On one side, I believe that we should pursue a career we are passionate about. But on the other side, I think we should NOT do something we’re bad at.So what should you do if you love something but suck at it? My opinion is to not pursue a career in that field. Treat it like a hobby instead. A lot of people love to make music, but they are not good enough to earn a living. But does that mean you should stop making music? Hell no! Go and jam with your friends- in your spare time. The bottom line is this: Only pu rsue a career that fits your strengths. I know this is somewhat of a limited view. Some people even call it pessimistic. But I see it as realism. We all have bills to pay and people to take care of. We can only do that by making a living. But that doesn’t mean we should do work we hate. There is always an industry that you love and that fits your strengths. And you know what? Like Cal Newport argues in  So Good They Can’t Ignore You; eventually, you will love the work you’re good at.3. Improve your universal skillsJust being good at your job doesn’t cut it. To truly make an impact in the workplace, you need what I call “universal skills.”Skills like writing, leadership, personal effectiveness, and persuasion are helpful to all professionals. Whether you are a coder or carpenter, you want to provide value to others. To keep doing that, you need those universal skills. The earlier you start improving your universal skills, the more likely it is that you will be ready when you get an opportunity.Want to learn more about improving your skills? Watch this video.4. Start at the bottomI never understand why people are so impatient. No one ever became successful by starting at the top. That’s simply not how life works.Just look at all the kids with rich parents who give them everything. Those kids often don’t understand the value of hard work and how hard it is to make a living. There’s no honor in getting a free pass.“But don’t you want to take the fast lane of life?” Some people might argue.Yes, of course. I’m all about personal effectiveness and achieving better results in less time. But I’m not about quick fixes and unrealistic expectations. For the first three years after I started my first business in 2010, I made virtually no money. And I even moved back to my parents for the first two years, so I had no expenses. All the money we made went back into the business. And I worked on the business 7 days a week. It’s the same when you start or switch careers. You might not see any benefits during the first few years. It’s a hard concept to grasp. Because you also don’t want to waste your time. That’s why I always warn people; if you’re seeing 0 results, you’re doing something wrong. When I didn’t pay myself at our business, the business itself was growing. You see? I’m not saying, “Put your head down and work yourself to death.”No, you still have to be smart. If you don’t see any results, be hard on yourself. But always be willing to start at the bottom. Forget about your ego. No one is good enough to do certain things. And at some level, we’re all students. It’s the only sustainable strategy if you want to achieve sustainable career success.5. Keep developing yourselfOne thing I always notice when I talk to successful people is how excited they are about the future. Have you ever experienced that as well? And it’s true. There’s nothing more exciting than the rush you get when you get new idea s or when you daydream about the future. At the same time, when you have no outlook on the future at all, you feel stuck and depressed. Am I right? We’ve all been there. There’s nothing more discouraging than being stuck at a dead-end job. That’s why we must always keep learning. We should never, for a single moment, get comfortable with our current job.Every day, we must learn and develop ourselves. And before you go out and say it, I will: “That’s hard!”It’s much easier to work 9-5 and spend the rest of the evening on the couch, watching tv shows, movies or playing video games. You and I both know that a fulfilling career doesn’t come for free. The price is hard work and effort. I’m willing to pay that; what about you? This  article  first appeared on  DariusForoux.com.
